@gravelexplorer24373 years ago Hi Ollie and Alex,
I recently bought a Canyon Grizl Slx as a Do-it-all bike. It comes with Dt Swiss GRC Wheels, which have an inner rim width of 24mm. I wanted to put on 28mm tires, but Dt swiss recommended at least 32mm, I thought, thats because they are hookless. After I saw your video about the new Zipp Wheels I wonder why these should be safe with 25mm tires, having a 23mm inner rim width, while the GRC are not. How different can the construction of the rims be, since they are both TSS and irw just differs by 1mm? Or do DT Swiss just recommend wider tires to be on the safe side? By the way: I intend to use inner tubes, to make it easier to switch tires. Cant afford another set of wheels for the road for now.
    Thanks a lot

@lufo53 years ago As a gravel enthusiast i do not agree with th answare. If you buy a good carbon frame is strong enough for bikepaking and all the hardest thing you can carbon frame improve dramatically the ride quality and reduce vibrations and this is a must on gravel.
carbon wheels would suffer a lot on rocks and holes you find off road. It is really easy to scratch or damage them.
on a gravel you need more than one pair of rims: best is 29" with hard surface tyres, 27. 5" with larger mixed surface tyres, 28" road rims and tyres. So having an expensive set of rims is a no clue

@jasonh14853 years ago WARNING: max torques are normally set for dry threads. If you lubricate the bolt it reduces friction and results in a higher clamping force at the sam e torque setting - you will need to reduce the max torque setting by at least 25% when lubricating the threads.
Torque settings are a maximum rating. With carbon frames and components you should tighten just enough to secure the fixing but not exceed the max torque. Carbon assembly paste is a must for certain fixings such as seat posts, as it increases friction between carbon parts reducing the need to clamp at higher torques.
Reference . Sorry Alex, had to get that off my chest. You dont want to be responsible for broken bikes (;-)
