Michael Solovyev. Historical Village of San Gaetano, Italy. From the photo made by Marina Mian from Italy. @DANIELSMITHArtistColor watercolor paints on Saunders Waterford Rough paper, 22x15 inches. Here is an amazing description given to me by Marina Mian (trans. from Italian): "San Gaetano is a small village near the town of Caorle, Metropolitan City of Venice, Veneto, Italy. With just 150 residents (now 151 - a girl was born days ago), it is the smallest fraction of the municipal area, but perhaps the most interesting one. It is well-known for its historical past, linked to the presence of the Franchetti barons, who chose this remote corner of the Caorle lagoon to make it an autarchic center of their rule, like Alvisopoli and the communities that flourished in the 19th century. Baron Raimondo Franchetti made it the heart of a vast agricultural and cattle breeding center which, however, did not meet the desired aspirations. More recently, however, the place has attracted a remarkable stream of tourism, especially from the Americans, around 1940s-1960s. They found home in San Gaetano, were guests of the Franchetti manor house and frequented their famous valleys. The most famous guests include Ernest Hemingway, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and the Academy Award for Best Actor winner Henry Fonda, married in fourth marriage to a Franchetti. San Gaetano and its fishing valleys were immortalized by Hemingway in his novel Across the River and into the Trees, as he was a great lover of hunting when hidden in a barrel, typical of these valleys. Today everything is as it was then, from the manor house, somewhat in a state of neglect, to the farmhouses, to the stretches of water of Valle Franchetti, as well as the rural buildings which, although recently renovated, retain their original appearance. However, San Gaetano has very ancient origins: in 1994 an extensive prehistoric Venetian culture site dating back to the late Bronze Age was found, studied by the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of the Veneto. There remains the agricultural vocation led by families who have passed from the condition of sharecropping to the direct management of the funds. Among the popular traditions, it is worth mentioning the Sagra Paesana (Villager Festival), which is celebrated on 7 August each year with music, food and wine stands. The oratory church dedicated to Saint Cajetan of Thiene, patron saint of the rural village, is next to the main building."
