Building from Marx’s definition of modernity, an early sociologist named Max Weber theorized that capitalism arose from calvinist protestantism due to the working spirit that theology instilled. Historians following Weber seek further explanations for modernity, such as science and legal rights. By defining modernity with these supposedly good values, they can push for other countries to adopt them, and therefore modernize. Today, this is considered highly imperialistic and antithetical to professional ethics, but you’ll still find historians like Niall Ferguson on the fringes of academia. This is driven by German philosophy, but the US was coming to power in the 20th-century, and scholars there had their own basis.
