Chile's national assembly has selected an indigenous woman to preside over the drafting of a new constitution. Santiago university professor and activist Elisa Loncon won an absolute majority in the second round of voting. Loncon represents the Mapuche people -- a group unrecognized by the current constitution from the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet. They are hoping a new text will afford them new cultural, political and social rights. She has been elected to lead the Constitutional Assembly. What is the significance of this in terms of policy? DW reporter Benjamin Alvarez-Gruber, himself a Chilean, fills us in about this. @flowbrandz3162 years ago Perhaps Chile does a fantastic job with this opportunity, but to those flippantly saying "Well done Chile! Congratulations", you apparently have read no history and have no clue how difficult these things are and just how often they fail miserably, often times making the country far worse than it was before..... I hope they can pull it off though. ... 3

@andrescastellon2153 years ago Important detail, just because she is indigenous doesn’t mean that she won’t be corrupted and ambitious. That happened in my poor Bolivia, with lots of indigenous and almost none of them competent nor honest to meet the need of the people. It only get worst if they are left wing ... 8
